The apostle John wrote, “In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink”, and in chapter seven and verse thirty-eight of his book, John shared how Jesus declared, “He that believes on me … out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water” where we read:
He that believes on me, as the scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
The verse reads, “He that believes on me, as the scripture has said, ...” John began with the words, “He that believes on me” or “the person whether male or female who trusts in, relies upon, clings to and has confidence within Jesus”, “as the scripture has said” which means “like the Holy writings have declared and proclaimed” the following words. John shared how Jesus declared the person who “trusts in, relies upon and clings to” Him will be as the “Holy Scriptures” declare with the following words.
The verse continues, “... out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” John added the words, “out of his belly” which means “from that person's lower region or innermost part of the soul or heart from which the seat of thought, feeling and choice are made” “shall flow rivers” or “will stream forth torrents and floods” “of living water” which means “pertaining to life giving, active, blessed and endless in the Kingdom of God water”. John shared how Jesus referred to the prophet Isaiah who wrote, “And the LORD shall guide you continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat your bones: and you shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not” (See Isaiah 58:11). The person who yields their life to Jesus Christ will not only be “filled” with the “water” of His Spirit, but will also “overflow” with that “spiritual water” to others. God loves people, and He desires to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus. Those who “drink” of Him will overflow with the “Spirit” of God and not only gain “satisfaction” to their own soul, but also refresh the souls of others who come to know Jesus.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus told the “religious leaders” that whoever “believes” in Him will receive the “Holy Spirit” of God, and their life will flow out “living waters” to anyone they encounter. God's desire is to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and as His Holy Spirit fills them, they will overflow to others with the love and concern of Almighty God. Let all who read Jesus' words “believe” in Him and receive His Holy Spirit.
Next time John shares how Jesus spoke, “of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
