The Holy Spirit - John 7:39

The apostle John wrote, “In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believes on me, as the scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water”, and in chapter seven and verse thirty-nine of his book, John parenthetically shared how Jesus spoke,of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive” where we read:

(But this spoke he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

The verse reads,(But this spoke he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive:” John parenthetically began with the words, “But this spoke he” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed His words about the living water” “of the Spirit” which means “pertaining to the third person of the triune God, the Holy Spirit who is coequal and coeternal with the Father and the Son”, “which they that believe on him” or “who the people both male and female trust in, rely upon, cling to and have confidence in Jesus” “should receive” which means “intend, have in mind and think to lay hold of, carry away, claim and procure”. John parenthetically shared how Jesus “declared” the “living water” was the “Holy Spirit of God” whom each person that believes in Him will “receive”.

The verse goes on to say, for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)” John continued with the words, “for the Holy Ghost” which means “because, since and on account that the the third person of the triune God, the Holy Spirit who is coequal and coeternal with the Father and the Son” “was not yet given” or “had not at that time been bestowed, granted, furnished or supplied”; “because that Jesus” which means “since and on account that the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “was not yet glorified” or “was not in any way at this time made glorious, adorned with luster, clothed with splendor and rendered excellent”. John shared how God's “Holy Spirit” was not given at this point because He was to arrive after Jesus ascended back into Heaven where Jesus would be “honored, adorned with luster and rendered excellent”.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how he inserted this parenthetical sentence to allow his readers to know at this point the “Holy Spirit” of God was not “given” to people. Jesus was yet to be crucified for the sins of the world and resurrected from the dead to provide eternal life to all who believe in Him. He would ascend into Heaven with His Father God, and there would be “honored” for all He was and did. Then the “Holy Spirit” would come to the earth to bring people into a relationship with God. God loves people, and His plan of redemption through His Son Jesus is available to everyone. The “Holy Spirit” speaks within the hearts of people concerning Jesus, and those who are wise will listen to and heed His voice and allow Jesus to be their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time John shares how the people said, of a truth this is the Prophet, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
