In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah said “this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD shall smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth”, and in chapter fourteen and verse thirteen of Zechariah, Zechariah said, “a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them” where we read,
And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them;
and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbor,
and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbor.
The verse reads, “And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them;”Zechariah began with the words, “and it shall come to pass” or “and the following will happen and occur” “in that day” which means “within that time period or season”, “that a great tumult” or “that a massive confusion, disquietude, discomfiture and vexation” “from the LORD” which means “separate and apart from Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “shall be among them” or “will exist in the midst and middle of them, the people who make war with Jerusalem”. Zechariah shared how it would occur that Jehovah God would dispatch a massive vexation upon the people who opposed “Jerusalem” with war.
The verse goes on to say, “and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbor, ...” Zechariah continued with the words, “and they shall lay hold” or “and they, the people who make war with Jerusalem, will seize” “every one” which means “each, all and the whole of the people” “on the hand” or “upon the physical hand” “of his neighbor” which means “belonging to his, the people's, companion, friend, fellow-citizen and intimate”. Zechariah shared how the people who oppose “Jerusalem” will seize the physical hand of their fellow-citizen and companion.
Finally the verse says, “and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbor.” Zechariah concluded this verse with the words, “and his hand” or “and his, the one who seizes their neighbor's own physical hand” “shall rise up” which means “will be exalted and come” “against the hand of his neighbor” or “in opposition to the physical hand belonging to his, the person's, companion, friend, fellow-citizen and intimate”. Zechariah ended this verse by sharing how the one who seized their “neighbor” by their physical “hand” would raise their own “hand” against their “neighbor's”.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Zechariah how Jehovah God would cause a massive panic in the midst of the people who oppose Jerusalem, and although they will attempt to seize the physical hand of their intimate companions, they will fight against them with hand to hand combat. Jehovah God is known to cause the foes of Israel to fight against one another, (See Judges 7:19-22; 2 Chronicles 20:1-24) however, God wants everyone to have a personal intimate relationship with Him through His Son Jesus who was crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and know that Jehovah God is able to cause those who oppose “Jerusalem” to fight among themselves.
Next time Zechariah says, “Judah also shall fight at Jerusalem”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
