The Levites' Divisions - Nehemiah 11:36

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about the groups of the people of Israel and their villages including, “the children of Benjamin from Geba dwelt at Michmash, and Aija, and Bethel, and in their villages, and at Ananthoth, Nob, Ananiah, Hazor, Ramah, Gittaim, Hadid, Zeboim, Neballat, Lod, and Ono, the valley of craftsmen”, and in chapter eleven and verse thirty-six of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, “the Levites' divisions” where we read,

And of the Levites were divisions

in Judah, and in Benjamin.

The verse reads, And of the Levites were divisions ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “and of the Levites” which means “and pertaining to the descendants belonging to Levi whose name means joined to and were set aside by God for His service” “were divisions” or “existed courses, classes, allotments and parts”. Nehemiah shared how there were courses and parts of the descendants belonging to Levi.

The verse goes on to say, “... in Judah, and in Benjamin.” Nehemiah continued with the words, “in Judah” which means “within Judah whose name means praised and was the kingdom comprised of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin which occupied the southern part of Canaan after the nation split upon the death of Solomon”, “and in Benjamin” or “and within Benjamin whose name means son of the right hand and was the tribe that descended from Benjamin who was the son of Judah”. Nehemiah shared how the “Levites” had courses and allotments within the areas of “Judah and Benjamin”.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah that the descendants belonging to Levi had certain courses and allotments within the regions of “Judah and Benjamin”. God knew the areas where He wanted His ministers to live, and the “Levites” were important in the worship of Him. God loves people, and He places ministers who have received His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead three days later in various places throughout the world. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and establish us wherever He deems best for His Kingdom and the people there.

Next time we begin a new chapter and see Nehemiah share about, “the priests and the Levites that went up with Zerubbabel”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
