In Psalms chapter fifty nine David appealed to God concerning the wicked, “Consume them in wrath, consume them, that they may not be: and let them know that God rules in Jacob unto the ends of the earth. Selah. And at evening let them return; and let them make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city. Let them wander up and down for meat, and grudge if they be not satisfied. But I will sing of your power; yes, I will sing aloud of your mercy in the morning: for you have been my defense and refuge in the day of my trouble”, and in chapter fifty-nine and verse seventeen of Psalms David said, “unto you, O my strength, will I sing” where we read,
Unto you, O my strength, will I sing: for God is my defense, and the God of my mercy.
The verse begins, “Unto you, O my strength, will I sing:” David began with the words, “unto you” or “toward you, Jehovah God the Divine judge”, “O my strength” which means “O my, David's, power and might”, “will I sing” or “shall I, David, make a melody or song”. David declared that he would break out in song to Jehovah God who was his power and might.
The verse continues, “for God is my defense, and the God of my mercy.” David added the words, “for God” or “because, since and on account that the Divine judge, ruler and Supreme God” “is my defense” which means “exists as my, David's, high place, refuge, secure height and retreat”, “and the God” or “and the Divine judge, ruler and Supreme God” “of my mercy” which means “pertaining to my, David's, goodness, kindness and faithfulness”. David said the Divine judge Jehovah God was his refuge, retreat and stronghold as well as his goodness, kindness and faithfulness.
When we think through the words in this verse, we see how David ended this Psalm by breaking out in song to Jehovah God who was his might, retreat, refuge, goodness, kindness and faithfulness. In other words, David would not have these wonderful traits and places to go. God is our Creator, and He desires to have a personal relationship with us that includes all these benefits as well as forgiveness of sins and eternal life when we put our faith and trust in His Son Jesus. God loves us and wants to be our “defense and refuge” and to extend to us His goodness, kindness and faithfulness. These things come when we yield to His Son Jesus as our “Savior and Lord”, and we shall “sing” of His wonders bestowed upon us forever and ever.
Next time we begin a new chapter and see David say, “O God, you have cast us off”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
