The beloved physician Luke wrote how, “Jesus entered and passed through Jericho, and, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich”, and in chapter nineteen and verse two of his book Luke shares how Zacchaeus, “sought to see Jesus” where we read:
And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.
The verse reads, “And he sought to see Jesus who he was;” Luke began with the words, “and he sought to see Jesus” or “and Zacchaeus desired, aimed, strived for and craved to observe and discern” “who he was” which means “who Jesus was”. Luke shared how Zacchaeus desired to observe Jesus to find out “who He was”.
The verse continues, “and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.” Luke added the words, “and could not for the press” or “and was unable, not capable or powerful and strong enough because, since and on account of the throng of people, multitude of men and company of people who flocked together in that place”, “because he was little of stature” which means “since and on account that Zacchaeus was small in height”. Luke shared how Zacchaeus, who was short in stature, wanted to see Jesus but was unable because the large group of people surrounding Him blocked his view.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn that Zacchaeus wanted to “see” Jesus because he was interested in who he was. However, Zacchaeus was “vertically challenged”, and because there was a massive crowd of people surrounding Jesus, he could not “observe” Him. God made people different from one another, and those differences should in no way impede people from seeking to “see” Jesus. God wants all people, regardless of their physical stature or features, to come to Him and believe that He is the “Savior and Lord” of all the world. “All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (See Romans 3:23) has nothing to do with “physical features or size”. Everyone is in need of Jesus' forgiveness, and those who are wise will do everything they are able to “observe” and come unto Him.
Next time Luke shares how Zacchaeus, “ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
