The beloved physician Luke wrote how, “Jesus entered and passed through Jericho, and, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich. And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at your house”, and in chapter nineteen and verse six of his book Luke shared how Zacchaeus, “made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully” where we read:
And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.
The verse reads, “And he made haste, and came down, ...” Luke began with the words, “and he made haste” or “and Zacchaeus hurried with eager urging”, “and came down” which means “and descended”. Luke shared how Zacchaeus speedily descended from the sycomore tree.
The verse goes on to say, “... and received him joyfully.” Luke continued with the words, “and received” or “and entertained hospitably” “him joyfully” which means “Jesus with exceeding gladness and rejoicing”. Luke shared how Zacchaeus “gladly entertained” Jesus within his home.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Zacchaeus quickly obeyed Jesus, descended from the “sycomore tree” and gladly extended “hospitality” to Him within his home. God loves people to quickly respond to Him in obedience, and since He has extended “salvation”, coming into a person's heart and life, through His Son Jesus, those who believe and trust in Him shall be forgiven of their sins and receive everlasting life. Those who are wise will respond “with haste” to Jesus' invitation and “receive” Him “joyfully” within their lives.
Next time Luke shares, “when they saw it, they all murmured”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
