In Psalms chapter thirty one David said to Jehovah, “Into your hand I commit my spirit: you have redeemed me, O LORD God of truth. I have hated them that regard lying vanities: but I trust in the LORD. I will be glad and rejoice in your mercy: for you have considered my trouble; you have known my soul in adversities. And have not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: you have set my feet in a large room”, and in chapter thirty one and verse nine of Psalms David said, “my eye is consumed with grief”, where we read,
Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in trouble:
my eye is consumed with grief, yes, my soul and my belly.
The verse begins, “Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in trouble:” David began with the words, “Have mercy upon me” which means “be gracious, show favor, pity and consider me, David”, “O LORD” or “O Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”, “for I am in trouble” which means “because, since and on account that I, David, am bound up, distressed, besieged and vexed”. David appealed to Jehovah God to extend to him grace, favor and pity because he was deeply distressed and vexed.
The verse continues, “my eye is consumed with grief, yes, my soul and my belly.” David added the words, “my eye” or “my, David's, physical eye” “is consumed with grief” which means “is wasted away, fails and shrinks towards anger, vexation, provocation and frustration”, “yes, my soul” or “even so and indeed, my, David's, life, inner man, mind, appetite, desire, emotion and passion” “and my belly” which means “and my, David's, abdomen which was symbolic of the seat of mental faculties”. David told Jehovah God how his physical eye was wasted away with vexation and provocation, and he reiterated that his inner man and heart were also in anguish.
When we consider the words in this verse, we see how David appealed to Jehovah God when he was in “trouble”. David desired the “mercy” of God, and because his “eye” and “soul” were deeply affected by his difficulties, He called out to Him. God was David's refuge and security, and when difficult situations came, He cried out to the LORD. God wants a relationship like this with every person, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die for the sins of mankind so anyone who believes and trusts in Jesus will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with Him. Though our “eye” may be overtaken with “grievous situations”, we may call upon Jehovah God and He will give provision and protection for us in our troublesome times.
Next time David says, “my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
