Come, You Children - Psalms 34:11

In Psalms chapter thirty four David wrote, “The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing, and in chapter thirty-four and verse eleven of Psalms, David said, “Come, you children, hearken unto me” where we read,

Come, you children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

The verse begins, Come, you children, hearken unto me: David began with the words, “Come, you children” which means “walk, proceed, move and lead away you people of a nation or group”, “hearken unto me” or “listen to, obey and give attention and interest to me, David”. David beckoned the people of his nation to listen and pay attention to him.

The verse goes on to say,I will teach you the fear of the LORD. David continued with the words, “I will teach you” or “and I, David, will goad, train and instruct you, children of the nation” “the fear” which means “the terror, awe, respect, reverence and pity” “of the LORD” or “pertaining to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”. David declared that he would instruct the people of his nation in the respect, awe and reverence of Jehovah God.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how David invited the people who were reading and listening to his words to pay attention to him. He wanted to instruct them in the reverence and awe of Jehovah God, and if they would observe what he had to say, they would learn “awe and respect” for Him. “Awe, reverence and respect” toward Jehovah God puts a person in their proper position before Him. He is the Creator of the Universe. He gives us life and breath, and He owns everything, and there is nothing that may really be identified as our own. He knows we are sinners, and that our sin separates us from Him, so He sent His Son Jesus into the world to be the “Savior and Lord” of everyone who believes in Him. We do well to sit back, observe David's words and learn what he has to teach us about “the fear of the LORD” because this is a first step in being forgiven for our sins and granted everlasting life with Him.

Next time David asks, What man is he that desires life, and loves many days, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
