Be Not as the Horse or Mule - Psalms 32:9

In Psalms chapter thirty two David wrote how Jehovah said, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go: I will guide you with my eye”, and in chapter thirty two and verse nine Jehovah said to David, “Be not as the horse, or the mule” where we read,

Be you not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding:

whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto you.

The verse begins, Be you not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: David began with the words, “Be you not as the horse” which means “do not exist like a swallow, swift or leaping horse”, “or as the mule” or “or like unto the offspring of a horse and donkey”, “which have no understanding” which means “that do not own or possess discernment, consideration, perception or insight”. David wrote how Jehovah God instructed him not to be like a “bucking bronco” or a “stubborn mule” that are without discernment, perception and insight.

The verse continues, whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto you. David added the words, “whose mouth” or “that the orifice in the face of the horse or mule” “must be held in” which means “needs to be restrained, curbed and muzzled” “with a bit and bridle” or “by the use of a pieces of equipment used for communication with a horse or mule that consists of an assembly of components that contacts and controls the horse or mule's mouth”, “lest they come near unto you” which means “or the horse or mule will not approach or draw close to you, David”. David wrote how Jehovah God employed the illustration of a “bit and bridle” put within a horse or mule's mouth so they might be directed by the rider, and if they did not have this equipment, they would not do what the rider says.

When we consider the words in this verse, we see through David how Jehovah God desires to simply “look” and we are to follow that direction. He wants to direct us with His eye and not have to put a “bit and bridle” on us like stubborn horses and mules who do not do as a rider instructs otherwise. God loves us, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross for our sins. He guides us to have a personal relationship with Him through Jesus, and when we surrender to Him, we make Him “Savior and Lord” of our lives. We are to be humble before Him and allow Him to lead and guide us in His path, otherwise we are proud, boastful and stubborn like “bucking broncos” and obstinate mules that require “bits and bridles” to be lead.

Next time David says, Many sorrow shall be to the wicked, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
