Mischief Devised Upon His Bed - Psalms 36:4

In Psalms chapter thirty six David said, “The transgression of the wicked says within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes. For he flatters himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity be found to be hateful. The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit: he has left off to be wise, and to do good”, and in chapter thirty six and verse four of Psalms David said, “he devises mischief upon his bed” where we read,

He devises mischief upon his bed; he sets himself in a way that is not good; he abhors not evil.

The verse begins, He devises mischief upon his bed; David began with the words, “He devises mischief” which means “he, the wicked person, thinks, plans, accounts, imputes, reckons and invents” “upon his bed” or “on his, the wicked person's, couch or bier for lying down”. David said the wicked person thinks and makes plans while he is lying upon a couch or bier.

The verse goes on to say, “he sets himself in a way that is not good; he abhors not evil. David continued with the words, “he sets himself” or “he, the wicked person, establishes, stations and presents his own self” “in a way that is not good” which means “upon a road, journey, manner or path that is in no way or manner pleasant, agreeable, excellent, rich or valuable”; “he abhors not” or “he, the wicked person, does not reject, despise or refuse” “evil” which means “wickedness, bad, malignancy, unpleasantness, misery or unhappiness”. David said the wicked person places himself in an unpleasant and disagreeable path, and he in no way hates or refuses wickedness and bad.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through David how the wicked person plots and plans his evil deeds while lying down, and he puts himself on a path that is unpleasant and disagreeable. He does not refuse or reject misery, unhappiness and bad. This is the manner of life for many people who have not received Jesus Christ as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Everyone has gone their own way as the prophet Isaiah wrote, “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all”. (See Isaiah 53:6), and this is the reason Jesus was sent into the world. Jesus was crucified to pay the price of death for the iniquities of mankind, and when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins and grant us eternal life with Him. God loves us, and even if we have plotted wickedness, put ourselves on a path that is not good and do not detest wicked things, He will save us when we humble ourselves and surrender to Him.

Next time David says, Your mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
