Destruction Unawares - Psalms 35:8

In Psalms chapter thirty five David said, “Plead my cause, O LORD, with them that strive with me: … let them be confounded and put to shame that seek after my soul: let them be turned back and brought to confusion that devise my hurt. Let them be as chaff before the wind: and let the angel of the LORD chase them. Let their way be dark and slippery: and let the angel of the LORD persecute them. For without cause have they hid for me their net in a pit, which without cause they have dug for my soul”, and in chapter thirty-five and verse eight of Psalms, David said, “let destruction come upon him at unawares” where we read,

Let destruction come upon him at unawares;

and let his net that he has hid catch himself: into that very destruction let him fall.

The verse begins, Let destruction come upon him at unawares;” David began with the words, “Let destruction” which means “allow and permit devastation, ruin and waste” “come upon him” or “to come to pass, be enumerated and brought on the person who strove and fought against David” “at unawares” which means “suddenly, without perception, discrimination and experience”. David wanted Jehovah God to allow sudden devastation and ruin to happen to his foes.

The verse continues,and let his net that he has hid catch himself: into that very destruction let him fall. David added the words, “and let his net” or “and allow and permit the trap or snare of the person who strove and fought against David” “that he has hid” which means “that the enemy of David concealed and made secret” “catch himself” or “seize and capture the enemies' own self”: “into that very destruction” which means “within the snare and trap of devastation, ruin and waste” “let him fall” or “allow and permit him, David's enemy, be cast down, prostrated and wasted away”. David desired that Jehovah God permit his enemy to be caught within the hidden trap he set for him, and he wanted Jehovah to allow his enemy to be cast down into that destruction as well.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how David wanted Jehovah God to surprise his enemy with devastation and ruin, and he wanted Him to allow his enemy to be caught in the secret trap that his enemy set for him. There is no doubt that David wanted his enemy to pay for his pernicious ways, and Jehovah God was the one in which to turn because He has rule over all. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die for the sins of all mankind because those sins separated people from a relationship with Him. God is holy, and those who come before Him are to be holy as well. When we rely upon, cling to and trust in Him, we will be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and enjoy the Holy Spirit of God in our lives who leads us into all truth. (See John 16:13) We have an opportunity to know the Sovereign ruler and judge of the universe who will judge our enemies because Jesus died in our place, and we will be made righteous in Him because of His sacrifice. (See 2 Corinthians 5:21)

Next time David says, my soul shall be joyful in the LORD, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
