A Hidden Net - Psalms 35:7

In Psalms chapter thirty five David said, “Plead my cause, O LORD, with them that strive with me: … let them be confounded and put to shame that seek after my soul: let them be turned back and brought to confusion that devise my hurt. Let them be as chaff before the wind: and let the angel of the LORD chase them. Let their way be dark and slippery: and let the angel of the LORD persecute them”, and in chapter thirty-five and verse seven of Psalms, David said, “they hid for me their net in a pit” where we read,

For without cause have they hid for me their net in a pit,

which without cause they have dug for my soul.

The verse begins, For without cause have they hid for me their net in a pit, ...” David began with the words, “For without cause” which means “because, since and on account not having a purpose or reason” “have they hid for me” or “the people who strove and fought with David concealed and secretly lay on behalf of me, David” “their net in a pit” which means “their trap such as for catching animals within a ditch, grave or place of destruction”. David said there was no reason for his enemies to secretly hide a trap or snare within a place of destruction for him.

The verse goes on to say, which without cause they have dug for my soul. David continued with the words, “which without cause” or “that not having a purpose or reason” “they have dug” which means “the people who strove and fought against David pawed, searched out and sought” “for my soul” or “on behalf of David's inner man, self, life, appetite, mind, living being, desires, emotions and passions”. David repeated the idea that there was no reason or purpose for his foes to paw out a trap to catch his inner man, mind, will, emotions and passions.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how David believed his enemies had no reason to set a secret trap for him, nor should they have searched for a way to lead his “soul” to destruction. David is very open about what he perceived was his enemies' plan for him, and his appeal is to Jehovah God who cares for David more than anyone else. God loves us, and His desire is to have an intimate relationship with us. He made this possible by sending His Son Jesus into the world to be executed on a cross for our sins, and when we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us eternal life and join with us whenever opposition arises. Jesus said, “Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets”, (See Luke 6:26) and when this occurs, our best defense is to pour out our hearts to Jehovah God and allow Him to deal with our foes. (See Romans 12:19)

Next time David says, let destruction come upon him at unawares, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
