Flattered in His Own Eyes - Psalms 36:2

In Psalms chapter thirty six David said, “The transgression of the wicked says within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes”, and in chapter thirty six and verse two of Psalms David said, “he flatters himself in his own eyes” where we read,

For he flatters himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity be found to be hateful.

The verse begins, “For he flatters himself in his own eyes, ... David began with the words, “for he flatters himself” which means “because, since and on account that he, the wicked, assigns, imparts, apportions and distributes to his own self” “in his own eyes” or “within his, the wicked person's, own physical eyes or mental and spiritual faculties”. David said the wicked person exalts, praises and adores his own self within his mind.

The verse goes on to say, “... until his iniquity be found to be hateful. David continued with the words, “until his iniquity” or “till the wicked person's, perversity, depravity and mischief” “be found to be hateful” which means “is as attained, detected, encountered and recognized as filled with hatred and utterly odious”. David wrote how the wicked person continues to praise and adore their own selves until their perversity and depravity is recognized as hated and odious by others.

When we consider the words in this verse, we see how David declared the wicked person's view of their own selves to be praiseworthy and commendable. In other words, they were blind to their true state, and they remained that way until the time when their depravity was exposed as odious. God knows the state of every person, and as Paul the apostle wrote, “there is none righteous, no, not one” (See Romans 3:10) and “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God”. (See Romans 3:23). Paul added, “the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (See Romans 6:23), and this is the reason God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Jesus as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins and grant us everlasting life with Him. Self lauding shall certainly be exposed, and those who are wise humble themselves and yield to Jesus Christ to put away their hateful depravity.

Next time David says, “the words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
