Blow the Cornet and Trumpet - Hosea 5:8

In the book of Hosea, Hosea shared how Jehovah God said of the nation of Israel, “They have dealt treacherously against the LORD: for they have begotten strange children: now shall a month devour them with their portions”, and in chapter five and verse eight of Hosea, Hosea said, “blow you the cornet in Gibeah, and the trumpet in Ramah” where we read,

Blow you the cornet in Gibeah, and the trumpet in Ramah:

cry aloud at Bethaven; after you O Benjamin.

The verse begins, Blow you the cornet in Gibeah, and the trumpet in Ramah:” Hosea began with the words, “blow you the cornet” or “strike, sound, thrust and blast the ram's horn” “in Gibeah” which means “within Gibeah whose name means hill and was a city in the mountain district of Judah”, “and the trumpet” or “and the clarion from its sundered or quavering note” “in Ramah” which means “within Ramah whose name means hill and was a town in Benjamin on the border of Ephraim about five miles (8 km) from Jerusalem and near to Gibeah. Hosea gave instruction for the “ram's horn” and the “clarion” to be blasted within the cities of “Gibeah and Ramah”.

The verse goes on to say, cry aloud at Bethaven; after you O Benjamin.” Hosea continued with the words, “cry aloud at Bethaven” or “shout, raise a sound and give a blast at Bethaven whose name means house of vanity and was a city of Bethel”; “after you” which means “following behind and afterwards of time”, “O Benjamin” or “O Benjamin whose name means son of the right hand and was the tribe descended from Benjamin who was the son of Jacob”. Hosea called upon the city of “Bethaven” to shout with the tribe of “Benjamin” following them.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how Hosea gave instruction to “Gibeah, Ramah, Bethaven and Benjamin” to make loud sounds with instruments because of their apostasy and abandonment of Jehovah God. The influence of idol worship and bowing down to false gods had spread, and God was aware of it. His desire was to have a loving personal relationship with the nations of “Ephraim, Israel and Judah”, but they and their cities would not yield to Him. God is the same way today (See Hebrews 13:8), and He invites every person to believe and trust in His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us a reason to sound our instruments and voices in honor and praise unto Him.

Next time Hosea says, “Ephraim shall be desolate in the day of rebuke”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
