Mighty Men of Valor - Nehemiah 11:14

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, the priests: Jedaiah the son of Joiarib, Jachin, Seraiah the son of Hilkiah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Zadok, the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub, was the ruler of the house of God. And their brethren that did the work of the house were eight hundred twenty and two: and Adaiah the son of Jeroham, the son of Pelaliah, the son of Amzi, the son of Zechariah, the son of Pashur, the son of Malchiah, and his brethren, chief of the fathers, two hundred forty and two: and Amashai the son of Azareel, the son of Ahasai, the son of Meshillemoth, the son of Immer, ...”, and in chapter eleven and verse fourteen of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, “mighty men of valor” where we read,

And their brethren, mighty men of valor, an hundred twenty and eight:

and their overseer was Zabdiel, the son of one of the great men.

The verse reads, And their brethren, mighty men of valor, an hundred twenty and eight:” Nehemiah began with the words, “and their brethren” which means “and their, the priests', fellow kinsmen, kindred and relatives”, “mighty men of valor” or “powerful, strong and able male human beings like an army”, “and hundred twenty and eight” which means “one hundred and twenty eight men”. Nehemiah shared how there was one hundred and twenty-eight fellow kinsmen of the “priests” who were strong and powerful like an army.

The verse continues, “and their overseer was Zabdiel, the son of one of the great men.” Nehemiah added the words, “and their overseer” which means “and their, the mighty men of valors', commissioner, deputy and governor” “was Zabdiel”whose name means “God is my endowment”, “the son of one of the great men” which means “the male offspring and progeny belonging to a certain or particular important, distinguished and noble male human being”. Nehemiah shared how “Zabdiel” was the commissioner over the “mighty men of valor” who were in Jerusalem.

When we consider Nehemiah's words in this verse, we learn more about the people who remained in Jerusalem. The “priests” and “a hundred and twenty-eight mighty men of valor” were governed by “Zabdiel” whose name means “God is my endowment” remained in Jerusalem. God uses people in His Kingdom who yield to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead three days later. When we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us a position in His Kingdom where we will serve Him for all eternity.

Next time Nehemiah shares about, “the Levites”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
