In Psalms chapter fifty nine David said, “The God of my mercy shall prevent me: God shall let me see my desire upon my enemies. Slay them not, lest my people forget: scatter them by your power; and bring them down, O Lord our shield. For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips let them even be taken in their pride: and for cursing and lying which they speak”, and in chapter fifty-nine and verse thirteen of Psalms David said, “consume them in wrath” where we read,
Consume them in wrath, consume them, that they may not be:
and let them know that God rules in Jacob unto the ends of the earth. Selah.
The verse begins, “Consume them in wrath, consume them, that they may not be:” David began with the words, “consume them in wrath” or “exhaust, perish, vanish and destroy them, David's enemies, in anger, burning rage, indignation and hot displeasure”, “consume them” which means “exhaust, perish, vanish and destroy them, David's enemies”, “that they may not be” or “so they, David's enemies, should not exist and be as nothing”. David desired that the Divine judge Jehovah God would destroy his hating foes within his burning rage and anger so that they no longer existed.
The verse continues, “and let them know that God rules in Jacob unto the ends of the earth. Selah.” David added the words, “and let them know” or “and allow and permit them, David's enemies, to perceive, see, find out and discern” “that God rules” which means “that the Divine judge, ruler and Supreme God has dominion, reigns and exercises power” “in Jacob” or “within Jacob whose name means heel-holder or supplanter and was the son of Isaac, grandson of Abraham, and father of the twelve patriarchs of the tribes of Israel” “unto the ends of the earth” which means “to the finality, cessation and extremity belonging to the country, territory, district, region and world”. “Selah” or “exalt, lift up and pause to meditate upon it”. David desired that the Divine judge, Jehovah God, allow his hating adversaries to perceive and understand that He is sovereign and reigns in “Jacob” or “Israel” and unto the extremities of the world, and he wanted anyone reading and listening to his words to pause and meditate upon this idea.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how David turned his “enemies” over to Jehovah God, and he wanted God to destroy and eliminate them. David believed this would make his “enemies” understand that Jehovah God is sovereign and reigns over the entire “earth”. God created the world and everything within it, and He owns it all. He desires to have an intimate personal relationship with everyone through His Son Jesus, and when we submit to Him, He will forgive our sins and grant us everlasting life. God loves us, and He will attend to our “enemies”. This is a testimony to the world that Jehovah God reigns and is sovereign over everything and everyone.
Next time David says, “at evening let them return”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
