In Psalms chapter fifty nine David said, “Deliver me from my enemies, O my God: … They run and prepare themselves without my fault: awake to help me, and behold”, and in chapter fifty-nine and verse five of Psalms David said, “O LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel, awake to visit all the heathen” where we read,
You therefore, O LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel, awake to visit all the heathen:
be not merciful to any wicked transgressors. Selah.
The verse begins, “You therefore, O LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel, awake to visit all the heathen:” David began with the words, “You therefore” or “You, Divine judge, ruler and Supreme God, then, wherefore and on this account”, “O LORD” which means “O Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “God of hosts” or “Divine judge, ruler and Supreme God over an organized army or group of angels”, “the God of Israel” which means “the Divine judge belonging to Israel whose name means God prevails and was the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob”, “awake to visit” or “wake up and arise abruptly as from sleep and watch to attend to, muster, number, reckon pay attention to and observe” “all the heathen” which means “each, every, the whole and everyone of the non-Hebrew, Gentiles and pagans”. David appealed to Jehovah God who rules and reigns over the “host of angels” and is the Divine judge of the nation of Israel to abruptly arise and pay attention to people who are pagans and non-believers.
The verse continues, “be not merciful to any wicked transgressors. Selah.” David added the words, “be not merciful” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover do not be gracious to, show favor to nor give pity” “to any wicked transgressors” which means “to the whole, total and every part of people who act treacherously, deceitfully and faithlessly and who commit trouble, bring sorrow and are idolatrous and evil”. “Selah” or “lift up, exalt and pause to meditate upon it”. David desired that Jehovah God not be gracious or favorable to any person who committed treacherous, deceitful, evil and idolatrous deeds.
When we think through the words in this verse, we see how David acknowledge the power and position of Jehovah God who rules and reigns over the spiritual world as well as the physical. He desired that God arise and attend to pagan people, and he did not want him to extend His grace to anyone who committed or practiced evil and idolatrous deeds. David knew justice and righteousness were within Jehovah God, and He would certainly bring about a just and right judgment against people who were idolatrous and committing evil. Jehovah God knew “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (See Romans 3:23), and “there are none righteous, no, not one” (See Romans 3:10). In other words, if God was not gracious and did not extend His favor toward people, no one would be saved. However, Jehovah God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of everyone, and when we believe and trust in Jesus, we will be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and be equipped with His Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth as we live in this world. It is true. God will judge the “wicked transgressors” who do not repent of their evil deeds nor receive His Son Jesus, but He will be gracious and will show favor to anyone who comes to Him before that day arrives. This idea is worthy of our meditation.
Next time David says, “They return at evening”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
