The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus, “took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished. For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on. And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again. And they understood none of these things: and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken”, and in chapter eighteen and verse thirty-five of his book Luke wrote how, “a certain blind man sat by the way side begging” where we read:
And it came to pass, that as he was come nigh unto Jericho, a certain blind man sat by the way side begging:
The verse reads, “And it came to pass, that as he was come nigh unto Jericho, ...” Luke began with the words, “and it came to pass” or “and it happened and came into existence”, “that as he was come nigh” which means “that at the time and moment the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate drew near and approached” “unto Jericho” or “toward Jericho that means place of fragrance and was a noted city abounding in balsam, honey, cyprus, myrobalanus, roses and other fragrant products”. Luke shared when Jesus approached the “fragrant city” of Jericho, the following occurred.
The verse goes on to say, “ … a certain blind man sat by the way side begging:” Luke continued with the words, “a certain blind man” or “a particular man with opaque as if smoky vision” “sat by the way side” which means “was seated alongside of the traveled and journeyed road” “begging” or “asking alms, soliciting and importune”. Luke shared how there was a “particular” man who could not see who was “asking alms” along the roadway.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn that Jesus was about to enter into the city of Jericho and He saw a “blind man” who was “begging” along the roadway. There will be more to this story in the next verses, but let it suffice us to know God knew this man's condition, and Jesus “happened” to pass by Him on the road. God had a plan for this man, and when Jesus notices those who are “blind” either spiritually or physically, their lives can be “changed” when they submit themselves to Him. Those who are wise will put themselves in the place of this “blind man” and understand, everyone is “blind” until they allow Jesus to make them to see.
Next time Luke shares how the blind man, “hearing the multitude pass by, he asked what it meant”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
