The beloved physician Luke wrote when Jesus, “was come nigh unto Jericho, a certain blind man sat by the way side begging. And hearing the multitude pass by, he asked what it meant. And they told him, that Jesus of Nazareth passes by”, and in chapter eighteen and verse thirty-eight of his book Luke wrote how the blind man cried out to Jesus, “have mercy on me” where we read:
And he cried, saying, Jesus, you Son of David, have mercy on me.
The verse reads, “And he cried, saying, ...” Luke began with the words, “and he cried” or “and the blind man shouted and raised a cry with a strong voice”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. Luke shared how the “blind man” shouted out to Jesus the words in the next part of this verse.
The verse continues, “ … Jesus, you Son of David, have mercy on me.” Luke added the word, “Jesus” or “Son of God, Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation”, “you Son of David” which means “you offspring and progeny of David whose name means beloved and was the second king of Israel and the ancestor of Jesus Christ”, “have mercy on me” or “help, aid, pity and have compassion upon me, the blind man”. Luke shared how the “blind man” cried aloud for Jesus to “have compassion upon” him and give him aid.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we can almost imagine the desperation and belief of this “blind man”. When he knew it was “Jesus” who was passing by, he saw it as his opportunity to be “relieved” of his affliction. Desperate people cry out to God, and when this “blind man” thought he might be “cured” if Jesus stopped, He shouted aloud and begged Jesus for help. People who recognize their “need” for Jesus will find Him available when they “cry out” to Him in desperation like this “blind man”.
Next time Luke shares how, “they which went before rebuked him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
