The beloved physician Luke wrote when Jesus, “was come near unto Jericho, a certain blind man sat by the way side begging. And hearing the multitude pass by, he asked what it meant. And they told him, that Jesus of Nazareth passes by. And he cried, saying, Jesus, you Son of David, have mercy on me. And they which went before rebuked him, that he should hold his peace: but he cried so much the more, You Son of David, have mercy on me. And Jesus stood, and commanded him to be brought unto him: and when he was come near, he asked him, ...”, and in chapter eighteen and verse forty-one of his book Luke wrote how, “Jesus stood, and commanded him to be brought unto him” where we read:
Saying, What will you that I shall do unto you? And he said, Lord, that I may receive my sight.
The verse reads, “Saying, What will you that I shall do unto you?” Luke began with the word, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “what will you” which means “what is it that you, the blind man” “that I shall do unto you” or “want me, Jesus, to do for you”? Luke shared how Jesus asked the “blind man” what he wanted Him to do for him.
The verse goes on to say, “And he said, Lord, that I may receive my sight.” Luke continued with the words, “and he said” or “and the blind man uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “Lord” which means “he to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”, “that I may receive my sight” or “that I, the blind man, may recover and receive his vision”. Luke shared how the “blind man” asked the “Lord” Jesus to give him vision.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus questioned the “blind man” as to what he wanted Him to do for him. This may have seemed obvious because the man was certainly without vision, but it appears that Jesus wanted the man to tell Him what he desired. God loves people to humble themselves and share with Him what they need. Even though He already knows, God desires to have communication through prayer directed to Him to provide them with “salvation” and meet their need. Those who are wise will yield their lives to Jesus and come to Him in desperation with whatever they need Him to do.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells the blind man, “receive your sight: your faith has saved you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
