All the Levites - Nehemiah 11:18

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, the Levites: Shemaiah the son of Hashub, the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Bunni, and Shabbethai and Jozabad, of the chief of the Levites, had the oversight of the outward business of the house of God. And Mattaniah the son of Micha, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph, was the principal to begin the thanksgiving in prayer: and Bakbukiah the second among his brethren, and Abda the son of Shammua, the son of Galai, the son of Jeduthun”, and in chapter eleven and verse eighteen of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about the number of, “all the Levites in the holy city” where we read,

All the Levites in the holy city

were two hundred fourscore and four.

The verse reads, All the Levites in the holy city ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “all the Levites” which means “each, every, the whole and everyone of the descendants of Levi whose name means joined to and were set aside by God for His service” “in the holy city” or “within the sacred, set apart and separate place of waking, town or encampment”. Nehemiah referred to every one of the descendants of “Levi” who lived within the sacred city of Jerusalem.

The verse continues, “... were two hundred fourscore and four.” Nehemiah added words, “were two hundred” which means “existed as two hundred” “fourscore and four” or “eighty four”. Nehemiah said there were two hundred and eighty four “Levites” within the “holy city” of Jerusalem.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah about the number of “Levites” who remained to live within Jerusalem. These men were responsible to care for the temple, the priests and whatever else was necessary for the worship of Jehovah God. God uses people in His Kingdom when they surrender their lives to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was resurrected from the dead three days later. When we yield to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and use us in His Kingdom to serve others as we worship Him.

Next time Nehemiah shares more about, “the porters”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
