The Principal Beginning Thanksgiving - Nehemiah 11:17

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, the Levites: Shemaiah the son of Hashub, the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Bunni. And Shabbethai and Jozabad, of the chief of the Levites, had the oversight of the outward business of the house of God”, and in chapter eleven and verse seventeen of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, “the principal to begin thanksgiving in prayer” where we read,

And Mattaniah the son of Micha, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph,

was the principal to begin the thanksgiving in prayer: and Bakbukiah the second among his brethren,

and Abda the son of Shammua, the son of Galai, the son of Jeduthun.

The verse reads, And Mattaniah the son of Micha, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “and Mattaniah” whose name means “gift of Jehovah” “the son of Micha” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Micha whose name means who is like God”, “the son of Zabdi” which means “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Zabdi whose name means endowment”, “the son of Asaph” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Asaph whose name means gatherer”. Nehemiah shared how “Matthaniah” who was “Zabdi's son” and “Asaph's” grandson existed as the following.

The verse goes on to say, “... was the principal to begin the thanksgiving in prayer: and Bakbukiah the second among his brethren, ...” Nehemiah continued with the words, “was the principal” which means “existed as the head, top, chief and choice” “to begin the thanksgiving” or “to lead the giving of thanks, laud and praise” “in prayer” which means “in intercession and supplication”: “and Bakbukiah” whose name means “wasting of Jehovah” “the second among his brethren” which means “the second in order in the midst of his, Babukiah's, fellow kinsmen, kinship and relatives”. Nehemiah shared how “Mattaniah” began the oration of thanks, and “Bakbukiah” was “second” after him.

Finally the verse says, “... and Abda the son of Shammua, the son of Galai, the son of Jeduthun.” Nehemiah concluded this verse with the words, “and Abda” whose name means “servant of Jehovah”, “the son of Shammua” which means “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Shammua whose name means gatherer ”, “the son of Galai” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Galai whose name means influenced”, “the son of Jeduthun” which means “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Jeduthun whose name means praising”. Nehemiah ended this verse by adding “Abda”who was Shammua's son, “Galai's” grandson and “Jeduthun's” great grandson.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah about more of the names of the “Levites” who not only remained in Jerusalem, but were instrumental in caring for the sanctuary and the “prayers of thanksgiving” that were to be offered there. God assembles a team of people to care for His worship times, and when we yield our lives to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead three days later, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us positions of service in His Kingdom to fulfill His purpose and will.

Next time Nehemiah shares the number of, “all the Levites in the holy city”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
