In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “And the residue of Israel, of the priests, and the Levites, were in all the cities of Judah, every one in his inheritance. But the Nethinims dwelt in Ophel: and Ziha and Gispa were over the Nethinims. The overseer also of the Levites at Jerusalem was Uzzi the son of Bani, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Micha. Of the sons of Asaph, the singers were over the business of the house of God”, and in chapter eleven and verse twenty-three of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, “the king's commandment concerning them” where we read,
For it was the king's commandment concerning them,
that a certain portion should be for the singers, due for every day.
The verse reads, “For it was the king's commandment concerning them, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “for it was the king's commandment” which means “because, since and on account that it existed as the royal ruler and leader's law, ordinance and precept” “concerning them” or “about and on account of them, the singers” that the following would happen. Nehemiah shared how the royal ruler gave an order about the “singers” within the temple.
The verse goes on to say, “... that a certain portion should be for the singers, due for every day.” Nehemiah continued with the words, “that a certain portion” which means “that a particular allowance , provision or part” “should be for the singers” or “was to exist from the musicians and ones who made music with their voices”, “due for every day” which means “carried out, assigned and regulate each, every, the whole and everyone of the sunrises to sunsets”. Nehemiah shared how there was to be a particular portion of the “singers” assigned to carry out their responsibilities each and every sunrise to sunset.
When we consider the words in this verse, we discover through Nehemiah that the royal ruler gave a command concerning the “musicians and singers” within the temple. A portion of them were to carry out their responsibilities every sunrise to sunset. God established order concerning worship in His temple, and those who were among the musicians were to abide by what He ordered through the royal ruler. God wants us to worship Him because when we do, He inhabits our praise. (See Psalm 22:3) God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and establish His order in whatever service we render to Him whether it be in our music or other areas to which we are called.
Next time Nehemiah shares about, “Pethahiah the son of Meshezabeel”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
