In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “For it was the king's commandment concerning them, that a certain portion should be for the singers, due for every day”, and in chapter eleven and verse twenty-four of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, “Pethahiah the son of Meshezabeel” where we read,
And Pethahiah the son of Meshezabeel, of the children of Zerah the son of Judah,
was at the king's hand in all matters concerning the people.
The verse reads, “And Pethahiah the son of Meshezabeel, of the children of Zerah the son of Judah, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “and Pethahiah” whose name means “freed by Jehovah” “the son of Meshezabeel” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Meshezabeel whose name means God delivers”, “of the children of Zerah” which means “belonging to the offspring and progeny belonging to Zerah or Zarah whose name means rising”, “the son of Judah” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Judah whose name means praised and was the kingdom comprised of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin which occupied the southern part of Canaan after the nation split upon the death of Solomon”. Nehemiah shared how “Pethahiah” did the following
The verse continues, “... was at the king's hand in all matters concerning the people.” Nehemiah added the words, “was at the king's hand” which means “existed at the royal ruler and leader's right hand of authority and power as the royal advisor, deputy or agent” “in all matters” or “within each, every, the whole and everyone of the business and affairs of public administration” “concerning the people” which means “about the human beings, compatriots, country-men, kinsmen and kindred within the nation of Israel”. Nehemiah shared how “Pethahiah” acted as the “adviser” to the royal leader within every concern of public administration.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah about another man who had a prominent position within the city of Jerusalem. “Pethahiah” served in the royal kingdom by being an advisor to the leader over the people of Israel. Everything that concerned “Israel” was overseen by him, and in a similar manner, God gives us positions of authority whereby we are to serve Him. God sent His Son Jesus to the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and He rose from the grave three days later so when we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and enable us by His Holy Spirit to fulfill everything that He assigns us to do.
Next time Nehemiah shares about, “the villages, with their fields”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
