Psalms chapter thirty seven begins with the heading, “[[A Psalm of David.]]” which breaks down “A Psalm” or “a melody or poem set to notes” “of David” which means “pertaining to David whose name means blessed and was the second king of Israel”, and in chapter thirty seven and verse one of Psalms David said, “Fret not yourself because of evildoers” where we read,
Fret not yourself because of evildoers, neither be you envious against the workers of iniquity.
The verse begins, “Fret not yourself because of evildoers, ...” David began with the words, “Fret not yourself” or “do not allow your own self to be hot, furious, angry, kindled or incensed” “because of evildoers” or “since or on account of people who commit displeasing, sad, injurious and wicked acts and deeds”. David instructed his listeners and readers not to be furious and incensed over people who commit wicked and injurious deeds.
The verse continues, “... neither be you envious against the workers of iniquity.” David added the words, “neither be you envious” or “no and not in any way allow your own self to be jealous, envious and zealous” “against the workers of iniquity” which means “in opposition to the people who make, fashion, accomplish, produce and commit injustice, unrighteousness, wrong and violent deeds”. David charged his listeners and readers not to in any way be jealous or zealous of the people who make and commit wicked and evil deeds.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how David gave instructions to his readers and listeners concerning people who work “evil” and “iniquity”. He encouraged them not to be furious and incensed over them, nor should they covet what the wicked gain from their evil. God knows the hearts and minds of every person, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus. When we come to Jesus with humbleness of heart and repentance in our souls, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (See John 1:9). God loves people, and although it may seem that those who work evil have great gains, we must consider their end when they will stand before the Almighty Judge of the universe who will have them give an account of every evil word, act and deed they have committed. (See Matthew 12:26 and Ecclesiastes 12:14)
Next time David says, “they shall soon be cut down like the grass”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
