In Psalms chapter thirty five David speaking of false witnesses said, “in my adversity they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together: yes, the abjects gathered themselves together against me, and I knew it not; they did tear me, and ceased not”, and in chapter thirty-five and verse sixteen of Psalms, David wrote about, “hypocritical mockers in feasts” where we read,
With hypocritical mockers in feasts, they gnashed upon me with their teeth.
The verse begins, “With hypocritical mockers in feasts, ...” David began with the words, “With hypocritical mockers” which means “alongside godless, profane and irreligious buffoons with stammering and dubious words” “in feasts” or “within cakes of bread”. David said the assembled false witnesses used dubious and stammering words against him in their celebrations.
The verse goes on to say, “they gnashed upon me with their teeth.” David continued with the words, “they gnashed upon me” or “the hypocritical mockers ground and grated on me, David” “with their teeth” which means “by the use of their physical teeth”. David wrote how the lying witnesses against him also clinched and ground their teeth together to show their displeasure with him.
When we think through the words in this verse, we see how David encountered people who were irreligious buffoons who not only spoke dubiously against him, but also ground their teeth together to demonstrate their disdain. David had people in his life who hated him, and they lied against him and “mocked” him with contempt. However, God loved David, and David loved God. Though David had his foes, He also had a personal relationship with God that relied upon Him to rescue and save him when people “mocked” him and treated him with disdain. God desires to have this type of relationship with every person, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die for the sins of all mankind. When we submit to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and be our defense against “mockers” and those who belittle and repudiate us in a contemptible manner.
Next time David asks, “Lord, how long will you look on?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
