In Psalms chapter eighteen David wrote, “I have pursued my enemies, and overtaken them: neither did I turn again till they were consumed”, and in chapter eighteen and verse thirty-eight of Psalms David said, “I have wounded them that they were not able to rise” where we read,
I have wounded them that they were not able to rise: they are fallen under my feet.
The verse begins, “I have wounded them that they were not able to rise:” David began with the words, “I have wounded them” which means “I, David, have smitten, shattered and injured severely his enemies” “that they were not able to rise” or “so David's enemies existed as incapable, without power and impotent to stand, be fixed, established or stationed”. David said he injured his enemies to the point that they were unable to stand upon their own feet.
The verse continues, “they are fallen under my feet.” David added the words, “they are fallen” or “they, David's enemies, exist as cast down, wasted, inferior and prostrate” “under my feet” which means “beneath my, David's physical feet”. David wrote how he so thoroughly subdued and conquered his enemies that they were beneath his feet.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn more from David about his defeat of his enemies. He beat them so badly that they were unable to get up, and they were now beneath his feet as he stood over them. This was only possible with the power, strength and ability given to him by Jehovah God, and David knew it. David gave honor to God for the capabilities given to him, and because God desires that every person defeat their greatest enemy, Satan, He provided them with the power of a relationship with His Son Jesus who died on the cross for their sins. When we submit to Jesus, we align ourselves with His power, as He said, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” (See Matthew 28:18) Jehovah God's power is available and given through a relationship with Jesus, and when we surrender to Him, He will pour out the power of His Holy Spirit upon us to be His overcoming witness to the world. (See Acts 1:8)
Next time David says, “You have girded me with strength unto the battle”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
