In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “As the fining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold; so is a man to his praise”, and in chapter twenty-seven and verse twenty-two of Proverbs Solomon shared about, “foolishness” not departing from “a fool” where we read,
Though you should bray a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle,
yet will not his foolishness depart from him.
The verse begins, “Though you should bray a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle, ...” Solomon began with the words, “though you should bray a fool” or “whether, if and in case you, Solomon's readers and listeners, would a person mix by pounding fine a person who is a dullard, simpleton and stupid fellow” “in a mortar” which means “within a vessel, hollow place or socket” “among wheat with a pestle” or “in the middle or midst of grain, corn or grits by the use of a grinding tool”. Solomon referred to pounding a person who is a dullard and foolish within a vessel by using a grinding tool to describe the following.
The verse goes on to say, “... yet will not his foolishness depart from him.” Solomon continued with the words, “yet will not his foolishness” or “still and even then shall in no way or manner his, the simpleton's, folly and silliness” “depart from him” which means “turn aside, be removed or taken away from him, the foolish person”. Solomon said stupidity and foolishness will not be removed person who is foolish even if they were ground in a vessel with a grinding tool.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how difficult it is for a person who acts and performs in foolish and silly ways. Even if the simpleton was like “wheat” that is ground within a “mortar and pestle”, their nonsensical ways would not be removed from them. God alone is able to change a person completely, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for all of us. When we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us how to deal with foolish people while He is removing foolishness from us.
Next time Solomon says, “be you diligent to know the state of your flocks”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
