In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “boast not yourself of tomorrow; for you know not what a day may bring forth”, and in chapter twenty-seven and verse two of Proverbs Solomon said, “let another man praise you, and not your own mouth” where we read,
Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth;
a stranger, and not your own lips.
The verse begins, “Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth;” Solomon began with the words, “let another man praise you” or “allow and permit some other person whether male or female commend, rave and boast about you, Solomon's readers and listeners”, “and not your own mouth” which means “and in no way or manner your, Solomon's readers and listeners', own personal orifice in the face used for eating, drinking and speaking”. Solomon instructed his readers and listeners to allow some other person to honor and commend them rather than their own “mouth”.
The verse goes on to say, “a stranger, and not your own lips.” Solomon continued with the words, “a stranger” or “a person who is foreign, alien, unknown and unfamiliar”, “and not your own lips” which means “and in no way or manner your, Solomon's readers and listeners', own physical lips used for speaking”. Solomon said it was preferable that an unfamiliar and unknown person give his readers and listeners “praise” than doing so themselves.
When we think through Solomon's words in this verse, we learn how we are to allow other people to honor and commend us rather than doing so ourselves. We would be better off having people unknown to us give us “praise” rather than allowing our “lips” to do so. God gives us our abilities, and we can do nothing without Him. He deserves all the glory and credit for anything we do, and because He loves us, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and keep us from honoring ourselves and allowing others to do so when they desire.
Next time Solomon shares about the heavy, “fool's wrath”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
