In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “A righteous man falling down before the wicked is as a troubled fountain, and a corrupt spring”, and in chapter twenty-five and verse twenty-seven of Proverbs Solomon said, “it is not good to eat much honey” where we read,
It is not good to eat much honey:
so for men to search their own glory is not glory.
The verse begins, “It is not good to eat much honey:” Solomon began with the words, “it is not good” or “it exists as in no way or manner pleasant, agreeable, rich, valuable and appropriate” “to eat much honey” which means “to consume and devour great amounts of honey from the honeycomb”. Solomon said it was in no way a pleasant and appropriate thing to consume too much “honey” from the honeycomb.
The verse goes on to say, “so for men to search their own glory is not glory.” Solomon continued with the words, “so for men” or “even, also and indeed it is in no way pleasant, agreeable, rich, valuable and appropriate for people both male and female” “to search their own glory” which means “to seek, desire, investigate or make inquiry toward the person's own personal honor, splendor, riches and reputation” “is not glory” or “seeking one's own glory does not exist as honor, splendor, riches and reputation”. Solomon said eating too much “honey” is similar to the person who attempts to gain their own honor, splendor and reputation.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how incongruent it is for a person to seek for their own honor and reputation. These traits are manifested and earned, and when we realize there is no one more honorable, splendorous and with greater reputation than Jehovah God, we should humble ourselves before Him. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on a cross for the sins of everyone, and when we surrender our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us to humble ourselves and allow others to set our honor, reputation and splendor and never to do so on our own.
Next time Solomon shares about, “he that has no rule over his own spirit”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
