In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “the sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason”, and in chapter twenty-six and verse seventeen of Proverbs Solomon shared about, “he that passes by, and meddles with strife” where we read,
He that passes by, and meddles with strife belonging not to him,
is like one that takes a dog by the ears.
The verse begins, “He that passes by, and meddles with strife belonging not to him, ...” Solomon began with the words, “he that passes by” or “the person whether male or female who marches over, traverses and overflows”, “and meddles with strife” which means “with controversy, dispute and quarrel” “belonging not to him” or “that is not their own”. Solomon referred to the person who interferes with an argument or dispute that is not their own.
The verse continues, “... is like one that takes a dog by the ears.” Solomon added the words, “is like one” or “is similar and in likeness to a person” “that takes a dog by the ears” which means “who firmly grabs and yanks a dog by their physical ears”. Solomon said the person who interferes with an argument that is not their own is similar to a person who yanks a dog by it's physical ears.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how we are to mind our own business when encountering the arguments and disputes of other people, otherwise there may be consequences equivalent to grabbing a dog by it's physical ears. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to interrupt the path of everyone because of their sin, and anyone who believes and trusts in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and taught to trust His Holy Spirit for when and when not to intervene in arguments that are not our own.
Next time Solomon shares about, “a mad man who casts firebrands”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
