Burning Lips and a Wicked Heart - Proverbs 26:23

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “the words of a talebearer are as wounds, as they go down into the innermost parts of the belly”, and in chapter twenty-six and verse twenty-three of Proverbs Solomon shared about, “burning lips and a wicked heart” where we read,

Burning lips and a wicked heart

are like a potsherd covered with silver dross.

The verse begins, Burning lips and a wicked heart ... Solomon began with the words, “burning lips” or “hotly pursuing, inflamed and persecuting physical lips used for speaking” “and a wicked heart” which means “and a criminal, guilty of crime, evil and hostile to God soul, mind, will, desire, living being, conscience and seat of emotions and passions” exist like the following. Solomon referred to the persecuting physical lips belonging to a person with an evil and hostile to God soul, mind and will are similar to the following.

The verse continues, “... are like a potsherd covered with silver dross. Solomon added the words, “are like a potsherd” or “exist similar to a shard, clay pottery or an earthen vessel” “covered with silver dross” which means “overlaid or plated with silver metal scoria, glaze or refuse”. Solomon said inflamed words from physical lips and a soul that evil and hostile to God exist similar to clay pottery that is overlaid with silver metal glaze.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how smooth words may attempt to conceal an evil soul like a silvery glaze covers a clay pot, but the person will eventually be known. God knows all about us, and nothing is hidden from Him. Regardless of how we attempt to cover ourselves, we cannot. God loves us, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and cause us to know when people are disguising their souls and give us the desire to never be like them.

Next time Solomon shares about, “he that dissembles with his lips”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
