In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “the slothful man says, there is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets”, and in chapter twenty-six and verse fourteen of Proverbs Solomon shared about, “the slothful on his bed” where we read,
As the door turns upon his hinges,
so does the slothful upon his bed.
The verse begins, “As the door turns upon his hinges, ...” Solomon began with the words, “as the door” or “similar and in likeness to the way a swinging gate or door” “turns upon his hinges” which means “goes and changes direction upon the door's joint position or pivot point”. Solomon referred to the way a “door or gate” swings on it's pivot point or “hinges” to describe the following.
The verse continues, “... so does the slothful upon his bed.” Solomon added the words, “so does the slothful” or “even, also and indeed the person whether male or female who is lazy, lax and indolent acts” “upon his bed” which means “on his, the slothful person's, couch, bier, sofa or place for reclining or sleeping”. Solomon said the person who is indolent and lazy turns upon their “bed or reclining place” similar to the way a “door” turns upon it's hinges”.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how a person who is lazy and indolent turns upon their “bed” similar to the way a “door” swings upon it's “hinges” or pivot point. From one side to the other the indolent person turns as they stay in their “bed” and do no work at all. God doesn't want us to be lazy, and when we yield our lives to His Son Jesus who was crucified on the cross for the sins of everyone, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and produce within us a desire to work in His Kingdom in various ways according to the gifts He has provided for us to use.
Next time Solomon says the “slothful hides his hand in his bosom”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
