Hiding Her Like the Wind - Proverbs 27:16

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike”, and in chapter twenty-seven and verse sixteen of Proverbs Solomon said, “whosoever hides her hides the wind” where we read,

Whosoever hides her hides the wind,

and the ointment of his right hand, which bewrays itself.

The verse begins, Whosoever hides her hides the wind, ... Solomon began with the words, “whosoever hides her” or “whatever person whether male or female conceals from discovery, protects and makes secret the contentious woman” “hides the wind” which means “conceals from discovery, protect and makes secret the breath of air”. Solomon said trying to conceal a “contentious woman” is like attempting to conceal a breath of air.

The verse goes onto say, “... and the ointment of his right hand, which bewrays itself. Solomon continued with the words, and the ointment” or “and the oil used for a medicament or unguent” “of his right hand” which means “belonging to the right physical hand of the person who attempts to conceal the contentious woman”, “which bewrays itself” or “that summons, appoints and grasps with the right hand's own self”. Solomon said the person who attempts to conceal a contentious woman is like the person who attempts to grasp something with an oiled or greasy right physical hand.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how it is useless to attempt to conceal a “contentious woman”. She cannot be contained by most people, and only a personal relationship with God through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins can a person truly be changed. God knows we all have sin, and the wages for sin is death. (See Romans 3:23; 6:23) When we yield our lives to Jesus as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us the wisdom to know when we can conceal the behavior of others and when it is a waste of time.

Next time Solomon says, “a man sharpens the countenance of his friend”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
