In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “A lying tongue hates those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth works ruin”, and in chapter twenty-seven and verse one of Proverbs Solomon said, “boast not yourself of tomorrow” where we read,
Boast not yourself of tomorrow;
for you know not what a day may bring forth.
The verse begins, “Boast not yourself of tomorrow;” Solomon began with the words, “boast not yourself” or “do not praise, commend or celebrate your, Solomon's readers and listeners, own selves” “of tomorrow” which means “concerning the day, time or future to come”. Solomon instructed his readers and listeners not to celebrate or brag about what will occur in the future.
The verse continues, “for you know not what a day may bring forth.” Solomon added the words, “for you know not” or “because, since and on account that you, Solomon's readers and listeners, are unaware, do not perceive or recognize” “what a day” which means “that which a sunrise to sunset or space of time” “may bring forth” or “might engender, beget or deliver”. Solomon said his readers were unaware of that which their current time might engender.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we discover through Solomon how we are not to celebrate or brag about what will happen in the future. James the apostle said, “Go to now, you that say, today or tomorrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Because you know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away. For that you ought to say, if the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.” (See James 4:13-15) The idea is that our future is in God's hands, and He decides what we shall do or not do and how much time we have on earth. God loves us, and He is concerned not only about our life on earth, but also our life throughout eternity. Sin separates us from a personal relationship with Him, and He sent His Son Jesus to the world to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we trust and believe in Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and guide us by His Holy Spirit into all truth so that we commit our time and acts upon earth completely to Him.
Next time Solomon says, “let another man praise you, and not your own mouth”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
