In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken truth, and a foot out of joint”, and in chapter twenty-five and verse twenty of Proverbs Solomon shared about, “a man that takes away a garment in cold weather” where we read,
As he that takes away a garment in cold weather,
as vinegar upon niter, so is he that sings songs to an heavy heart.
The verse begins, “As he that takes away a garment in cold weather, ...” Solomon began with the words, “as he that takes away a garment” or “similar and in likeness to a person whether male and female who seizes or removes clothing, raiment, robes or vestures” “in cold weather” which means “within cool, glacial and frigid temperatures or times”. Solomon referred to the person who removes clothing from another person when there are frigid temperatures outside.
The verse continues, “... as vinegar upon niter, so is he that sings songs to an heavy heart.” Solomon added the words, “as vinegar upon niter” or “is similar and in likeness to acidic acid on natron or carbonate of soda”, “so is he that sings songs” which means “even and indeed exists the person whether male or female who makes lyrical or religious music with their voices” “to an heavy heart” or “toward a disagreeable, malignant, unpleasant and displeasing soul, mind, will, desire, living being, conscience or seat of emotions and affections”. Solomon said a person who makes lyrical music with their voices to someone who has an unpleasant and displeasing soul is similar to acidic acid being pour upon carbonate soda.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how singing songs to someone with a “heavy heart” may do more damage than good. Rather than help the person, melodious sounds may make them feel worse than before the “songs”. God knows us in our “heaviest” hour, and no one can minister to us like Him. He gave us His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and produce within us the wisdom to know when we are to make music with our voices to people who have troubled souls.
Next time Solomon says, “if your enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
