In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaks the bone”, and in chapter twenty-five and verse sixteen of Proverbs Solomon asked, “have you found honey?” where we read,
Have you found honey? Eat so much as is sufficient for you,
lest you be filled therewith, and vomit it.
The verse begins, “Have you found honey? Eat so much as is sufficient for you, ...” Solomon began with the words, “have you found honey” or “have you, Solomon's readers and listeners, discovered, attained, secured and received sticky, gummy syrup or honey”? “eat so much” which means “consume and devour only” “as is sufficient for you” or “which is adequate and enough for you, Solomon's readers and listeners”. Solomon asked if his readers and listeners had discovered “sweet honey”, and if so, his advice was to only consume the amount that was adequate for them.
The verse continues, “... lest you be filled therewith, and vomit it.” Solomon added the words, “lest you be filled therewith” or “peradventure and perhaps you, Solomon's readers and listeners, be sated, satisfied, surfeited and enriched by the sweet honey”, “and vomit it” which means “ and spew out, regurgitate and disgorge it, the sweet honey”. Solomon said the result of overindulging in sweet honey would be to regurgitate it.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how we are not to over consume “honey” or any other “sweet” food or the result will be regurgitation. Some have said, “too much of a good thing is not good for us”, and when we follow Jehovah God through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth so we do not take in excessive amounts of anything that will harm us rather than do us good.
Next time Solomon says, “withdraw your foot from your neighbor's house”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
