A Mad Man Casting Firebrands - Proverbs 26:18

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “He that passes by, and meddles with strife belonging not to him, is like one that takes a dog by the ears”, and in chapter twenty-six and verse eighteen of Proverbs Solomon shared about, “a mad man who casts firebrands” where we read,

As a mad man who casts firebrands, arrows, and death, ...

The verse begins, As a mad man who casts firebrands, ... Solomon began with the words, “as a mad man” or “similar and in likeness to a person whether male or female who is amazed, startled, rabid and as a maniac” “who casts firebrands” which means “that throws or shoots hot, flaming missiles or fetters”. Solomon referred to the maniac person who shoots flaming fetters.

The verse goes on to say, “... arrows, and death, Solomon continued with the word, “arrows” or “shafts of a spear or darts”, “and death” which means “and pestilence, ruin and dying”. Solomon included the throwing of spears, darts and dying to describe the person in our next verse.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon that the person who shoots hot fetters and spears and is inclined toward death is a lunatic or acts in a maniacal manner. This describes the person in our next verse. For now, let us concentrate upon this person's wild behavior, and realize this is not the way God wants us to be. He knew we have sin in our lives that causes us to act maniacal at times, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and make us aware of people who “cast firebrands, arrows, and death”.

Next time Solomon shares about, “a man that deceives his neighbor”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
