In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “He that hates dissembles with his lips, and lays up deceit within them. When he speaks fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart. Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be showed before the whole congregation”, and in chapter twenty-six and verse twenty-seven of Proverbs Solomon said, “whosoever digs a pit shall fall therein” where we read,
Whosoever digs a pit shall fall therein:
and he that rolls a stone, it will return upon him.
The verse begins, “Whosoever digs a pit shall fall therein:” Solomon began with the words, “whosoever digs a pit” or “whatever person whether male or female who excavates and opens a ditch or trap” “shall fall therein” which means “will be cast down and descend within the ditch”. Solomon said whatever person excavates a ditch or trap will be cast down within it themselves.
The verse continues, “and he that rolls a stone, it will return upon him.” Solomon added the words, “and he that rolls a stone” or “and the person whether male or female who removes and rotates a boulder upon people”, “it will return upon him” which means “the boulder shall turn or come back on the person who rotated it in the first place”. Solomon said the person who rotates a boulder with the intention of hurting others with it will have it fall upon them instead.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how there are repercussions for attempting to harm other people. Although for a time a person may believe themselves to have escaped judgment for their pernicious behavior, God is watching and will return judgment upon them. (See Isaiah 63:4; Romans 12:19) God wants to save us from these sinful behaviors and their results, and He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross to pay the price for every sin committed against Him and other people. When we surrender to Jesus, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and keep us from “digging traps” and “rolling boulders” upon others and how to commit their vengeance unto Him.
Next time Solomon says, “a lying tongue hates those that are afflicted by it”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
