In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “A prudent man foresees the evil, and hides himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished”, and in chapter twenty-seven and verse thirteen of Proverbs Solomon said, “take his garment that is surety for a stranger” where we read,
Take his garment that is surety for a stranger,
and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.
The verse begins, “Take his garment that is surety for a stranger, ...” Solomon began with the words, “take his garment” or “receive, fetch, lay hold of and acquire his, the person whether male or female following's, covering, apparel, clothes or raiment” “that is surety” which means “who exists as a pledge or exchange” “for a stranger” or “on behalf of a person who is a foreigner, alien or unknown”. Solomon instructed his readers and listeners to acquire a vesture or wardrobe from someone who guarantees the debt of a person who is unknown.
The verse continues, “... and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.” Solomon added the words, “and take a pledge of him” or “and receive, fetch, lay hold of and acquire a deposit or bond from the person” “for a strange woman” which means “on behalf of a female person who is a foreigner, alien, prostitute, harlot or adulteress”. Solomon said to obtain a deposit if the person puts up security for an adulteress.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how we are to acquire collateral if someone is guaranteeing the debt of another person and particularly if they are doing do for a person who is an adulteress or unknown to us. God wants us to be wise in our dealings with other people, and when the are unfamiliar to us, (and sometimes even when we do), we should attain a modicum of trust to validate their commitment. God loves us, and He will protect us in these dealings when we submit to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us through His Holy Spirit how to be wise in our dealings with other people both known and unknown.
Next time Solomon shares about, “he that blesses his friend with a loud voice”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
