Diligent to Know - Proverbs 27:23

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “Though you should bray a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle, yet will not his foolishness depart from him”, and in chapter twenty-seven and verse twenty-three of Proverbs Solomon said, “be you diligent to know the state of your flocks” where we read,

Be you diligent to know the state of your flocks,

and look well to your herds.

The verse begins, Be you diligent to know the state of your flocks, ... Solomon began with the words, “be you diligent to know” or “exist you, Solomon's readers and listeners, discriminate, discerning and acquainted with perception, cognition and recognition concerning” “the state of your flocks” which means “the condition and status pertaining to your, Solomon's readers and listeners', sheep, goats or cattle”. Solomon instructed his readers and listeners to have discriminating perception concerning their cattle.

The verse continues, “... and look well to your herds. Solomon added the words, and look well” or “and give careful attention” “to your herds” which means “toward your, Solomon's readers and listeners', animal groups or droves”. Solomon told his readers and listeners to give careful attention to their groups of animals.

When we think through Solomon's words in this verse, we learn how he wanted his readers and listeners to pay attention and care for their animals. Solomon's readers and listeners were agrarian who took care of flocks and herds, and even through that may not be our area of management, we have responsibilities as well. Whatever God has been put within our trust is to be carefully watched over. God gives people wisdom and knowledge in various areas, and He wants us to have a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins so He can forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us the desire and wisdom to care for that which He provides for us to oversee.

Next time Solomon says, “riches are not forever”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
