In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “Have you found honey? Eat so much as is sufficient for you, lest you be filled therewith, and vomit it”, and in chapter twenty-five and verse seventeen of Proverbs Solomon said, “withdraw your foot from your neighbor's house” where we read,
Withdraw your foot from your neighbor's house;
lest he be weary of you, and so hate you.
The verse begins, “Withdraw your foot from your neighbor's house;” Solomon began with the words, “withdraw your foot” or “seldom set, permit or allow your, Solomon's readers and listeners' physical foot” “from your neighbors's house” which means “separate and apart from your, Solomon's readers and listeners', fellow-citizen's, friend's or intimate companion's dwelling place, abode or habitation”. Solomon instructed his readers and listeners to seldom allow their “physical foot” to continue within their fellow-citizen's or intimate companion's dwelling place.
The verse goes on to say, “lest he be weary of you, and so hate you. Solomon continued with the words, “lest he be weary of you” or “beware and peradventure he, Solomon's readers and listeners' neighbor, become excessively filled, surfeited and sated with you, Solomon's listeners and readers”, “and so hate you” which means “and even and indeed become odious, and as an enemy and foe to you, Solomon's readers and listeners”. Solomon said perhaps the “neighbor” of his readers and listeners would be excessively filled with them and become as their enemy.
When we think through Solomon's words in this verse, we learn how we are not to overstay our welcome in our friends and companion's homes. If we stay too long, our “neighbors” will tire of us, and if we stay way too long, we can become loathed by them. God will give us the wisdom to know the length of time we are to visit others especially when we yield to Him through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins. As we put our faith and trust in Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us His Holy Spirit who will guide us as to how long we stay and when we are to leave our “neighbor's” home.
Next time Solomon shares about, “a man that bears false witness against his neighbor”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
