Set Not Your Heart Upon Riches - Psalms 62:10

In Psalms chapter sixty-two David said, “Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity”, and in chapter sixty-two and verse ten of Psalms David said, “Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery” where we read,

Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery:

if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.

The verse begins, Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery: David began with the words, “Trust not in oppression” or “do not have faith, confidence or security within extortion, injury, distress and unjust gain”, “and become not vain” which means “and do not act emptily, lead astray and filled with swollen expectation” “in robbery” or “within something plundered and taken away by violence”. David instructed his readers and listeners not to put their confidence in extortion and unjust gain nor should they be lead astray by violent plundering and theft.

The verse goes on to say,if riches increase, set not your heart upon them. David continued with the words, if riches increaseor “whether and in case strength, might, efficiency and wealth bear fruit and flourish”, “set not your heart” which means “do not put, lay, fix, appoint and regard within your, David's listeners and readers', inner man, souls, minds, knowledge, thinking, reflection, memory, inclination, resolution and determination” “upon them” or “on the riches”. David told his readers and listeners not to allow their souls and minds to be fixed upon the flourishing of their wealth, strength and might.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how David addressed two extremes for the people to whom he was writing. They were not to have confidence in distress or unjust gain, nor were they to have faith when their wealth, power and might flourished. God desires that we put our faith, trust and confidence in Him, and when we surrender our lives to His Son Jesus as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and be our provision and protector for all eternity. God loves us, and nothing is more powerful and greater than Him. Let us give Him praise, honor and glory for His abundant blessing to us so that we need not have confidence in unjust gains or increased wealth.

Next time David says, “God has spoken”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
