Shooting in Secret at the Perfect - Psalms 64:4

In Psalms chapter sixty-four David said, “Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity. Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words”, and in chapter sixty-four and verse four of Psalms David said the wicked do this, “that they may shoot in secret at the perfect” where we read,

That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not.

The verse begins, That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: David began with the words, “that they may shoot” or “so they, the wicked people who schemed against David, might throw out, direct, and project like an arrow” “in secret” which means “within the hiding place for the perpetration of crime” “at the perfect” or “at the complete, ones who lack nothing in physical strength, beauty, soundness, wholeness and are morally innocent and have integrity”. David said the wicked people who plotted against him, sharpened their “tongues” and bent their “bows” to “shoot arrows” of angry and discontented language against him from hiding places meant to perpetrate crimes against him.

The verse continues, suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not. David added the words, “suddenly do they shoot” or “instantly, straightway and abruptly the wicked evil speakers and plotters, project and shoot their piercing words” “at him” which means “toward him, David”, “and fear not” or “and do not revere, stand in awe or dread in any way or manner”. David said the wicked people who were scheming and using their pernicious words against him were planning in “secret” so they could fire away at him without any reverence or awe.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how David knew the wicked people who were against him kept their angry and discontented words in hiding because they wanted to ambush him with their assaults. They had no reverence or awe for David because he had a relationship with Jehovah God, and they desired to destroy David for his belief in Him. God knows people who believe in His Son Jesus will be attacked for their belief and trust in Him, and even as Jesus was persecuted for righteousness sake, so will His believers be. (See Matthew 5:10) Jesus promised, “theirs is the kingdom of heaven”, and although it may appear for a while that people get away with their pernicious words and plans against the righteous, God is watching and will bring into account those who rise up against his beloved.

Next time David says, “they encourage themselves in an evil matter”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
