Breaking Down His Hedges - Psalms 89:40

In Psalms eighty nine Ethan the Psalmist said of Jehovah God, “You have made void the covenant of your servant: you have profaned his crown by casting it to the ground”, and in chapter eighty nine and verse forty of Psalms Ethan said to Jehovah God, “you have broken down all his hedges” where we read,

You have broken down all his hedges; you have brought his strong holds to ruin.

The verse begins, You have broken down all his hedges; Ethan began with the words, “you have broken down” or “you, Jehovah God, have ”breached, burst out and dispersed “all his hedges” which means “each, every, the whole and everyone of his, David's, walls, sheep cotes and defenses”. Ethan said Jehovah God burst through and dispersed every one of David's defenses.

The verse goes on to say,you have brought his strong holds to ruin. Ethan continued with the words, “you have brought” or “you, Jehovah God, have put, placed, set and appointed” “his strong hold” which means “his, Jehovah God's, fences, fortresses and fortified cities” “to ruin” or “to destruction, terror, dismay and dissolution”. Ethan said Jehovah God set and appointed David's fortresses and fortified cities to be brought to destruction.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how Ethan said Jehovah God allowed David's means of protection to be violated, and his fortresses were destroyed. God was David's defense because He had a personal relationship with Him, and He is the Divine protector of Israel from whom David came. Sometimes it appears that God is allowing hating foes to breach our walls and destroying our fortresses, but we must remember that He loves us. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and protect and defend us according to His perfect plan and will.

Next time Ethan the Psalmist says to Jehovah God, “all that pass by the way spoil him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
