The LORD Loves the Gates of Zion - Psalms 87:2

In Psalms eighty seven the Psalmist said, “His foundation is in the holy mountains”, and in chapter eighty seven and verse two of Psalms the Psalmist said, “The LORD loves the gates of Zion” where we read,

The LORD loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.

The verse begins, “The LORD loves the gates of Zion ... The Psalmist began with the words, “the LORD” or “Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “loves the gates” which means “has strong desire and affection for the entrances or openings” “of Zion” or “belonging to Zion whose name means parched place and was another name for Jerusalem especially in the prophetic books”. The Psalmist said Jehovah God has deep affection toward the entrances and opening belonging to “Zion” or Jerusalem.

The verse goes on to say,... more than all the dwellings of Jacob. The Psalmist continues with the words, “more than all” or “to a greater degree and more abundantly than each, every, the whole and everyone of” “the dwellings of Jacob” which means “the habitations, tents and abodes belonging to Jacob whose name means heel-holder or supplanter and was son of Isaac, grandson of Abraham, and father of the twelve patriarchs of the tribes of Israel”. The Psalmist said Jehovah God has more affection for the entrances of “Zion” than He is for all the other habitations within Israel.

When we think through words in this verse, we see how David shared Jehovah God's compassion and affection for the openings and entrances into the city of Jerusalem. He said God “loved” them more than any other location in Israel, and Jerusalem became His base of operations to save the world. His Son Jesus was sent into Jerusalem where He would die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we surrender our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and dwell with us all the days of our lives and throughout eternity.

Next time the Psalmist says, “Glorious things are spoken of you, O city of God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
