Singing of the LORD's Mercies - Psalms 89:1

Psalms eighty nine begins with the heading, “[[Maschil of Ethan the Ezrahite.]]” which breaks down “Mashail” or “a song or poem of contemplation” “of Ethan” which means “belonging to Ethan whose name means enduring and was an Ezrahite known for his wisdom and probably a contemporary with Solomon” “the Ezrahite” or “a native as arising out of the soil from the family of Zerach”, and in chapter eighty nine and verse one of Psalms Ethan the Psalmist said, “I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever” where we read,

I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever:

with my mouth will I make known your faithfulness to all generations.

The verse begins, I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever: Ethan began with the words, “I will sing” or “I, Ethan, shall make music with my voice” “of the mercies” which means “pertaining to the goodness, kindness and faithfulness” “of the LORD” or “belonging to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “for ever” which means “for long duration, antiquity, futurity and unto everlasting”. Ethan declared that he would perpetually make music with his voice to the goodness, kindness and faithfulness of Jehovah God.

The verse goes on to say, with my mouth will I make known your faithfulness to all generations. The Psalmist continued with the words, “with my mouth” or “by the use of my, Ethan's, orifice in the face used for drinking, eating and speaking” “will I make known” which means “shall I, Ethan, perceive, discriminate, distinguish, recognize and acknowledge” “your faithfulness” or “your, Jehovah God's, firmness, steadfastness, stability and truth” “to all generations” which means “toward each, every, the whole and everyone of the future periods, ages, dwelling places, habitations and posterity”. Ethan said he would use his “mouth” to acknowledge and proclaim Jehovah God's steadfastness and truth to every age and posterity.

When we consider the words in this verse, we see how Ethan declared that he would make music with his voice concerning the goodness, kindness and faithfulness of Jehovah God, and he would use his voice to declare the steadfastness and truth of God to every age. From this Psalm forward, he has done so. God is good. He is kind, and He is faithful. His stability and truth are worthy of speaking to every “generation” that arrives, and through means of the gospel of Jesus Christ, this has come to pass. God loves people, and His desire is to provide salvation to every person through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and allow us to join Ethan in publishing His greatness to our “generation” and all the ages to come.

Next time Ethan the Psalmist says, “Mercy shall be built up for ever”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
