Ruling the Raging of the Sea - Psalms 89:9

In Psalms eighty nine Ethan the Psalmist asked, “O LORD God of hosts, who is a strong LORD like unto you? or to your faithfulness round about you?”, and in chapter eighty nine and verse nine of Psalms Ethan said, “you rule the raging of the sea” where we read,

You rule the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, you still them.

The verse begins, You rule the raging of the sea: Ethan began with the words, “You rule” or “you, Jehovah God, exercise dominion and reign over” “the raging of the sea” which means “the majesty, rising up and swelling pertaining to the large body of water known as a sea such as the Mediterranean, Red or Dead Seas”. Ethan remarked upon the power of Jehovah God to exercise dominion over the swelling of the mighty “sea”.

The verse continues, when the waves thereof arise, you still them. Ethan added the words, “when the waves thereof” or “at the time and moment the heaping and springing billows of the sea” “arise” which means “rise up and swell”, “you still them” or “you, Jehovah God, soothe, triumph over and quiet them, the billows of the sea”. Ethan said Jehovah God quiets the billows of the sea when they arise.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how Ethan commented upon Jehovah God's power over the turbulent risings of the “sea”, and when the billows rise, He is easily able to quiet them. Jesus calmed the “sea” when His disciples were caught in a storm by simply saying, “Peace, be still!” (See Mark 4:39) God created the world and everything that is in it, and He is able to “still” any risings that appear. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and bring peace not only to our circumstances, but also with Him which shall last throughout eternity.

Next time Ethan the Psalmist says, “you have broken Rahab in pieces”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
