This and That Man Born - Psalms 87:5

In Psalms eighty seven the Psalmist said, “I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon to them that know me: behold Philistia, and Tyre, with Ethiopia; this man was born there” and in chapter eighty seven and verse five of Psalms the Psalmist said, “of Zion it shall be said, This and that man was born in her” where we read,

And of Zion it shall be said, This and that man was born in her:

and the highest himself shall establish her.

The verse begins, And of Zion it shall be said, This and that man was born in her: The Psalmist began with the words, “and of Zion” or “and pertaining to Zion whose name means parched place and was another name for Jerusalem especially in the prophetic books” “it shall be said” which means “the words will be proclaimed, uttered and declared”, “and that man” or “and the person who” “was born in her” which means “was birthed and brought forth within her, Zion or Jerusalem”. The Psalmist referred to the words that would be proclaimed about Jerusalem concerning the people were birthed in the city.

The verse continues, and the highest himself shall establish her. The Psalmist added the words, “and the highest himself” or “and the uppermost, Highest, lofty and Supreme One His Own Self” “shall establish her” which means “will fix, make firm and stable her, the city of Jerusalem”. The Psalmist said that the Most High Jehovah God will fix and make stable the city of Jerusalem.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how David continued to exalt the city of Jerusalem as he referred to the people who would become citizens there. He knew the Most High Jehovah God would fix and make stable Jerusalem, and He would make it the place where His Son Jesus would die for the sins of the entire world. His offer is for all people to believe and trust in Jesus as their “Savior and Lord”, and when we surrender to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and make us citizens of His “Heavenly” city Jerusalem. (See Revelation 3:12; 21:2)

Next time the Psalmist says, “the LORD shall count”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
